I have been taking display layouts to train shows in the Southern Ontario area for about seven or eight years. I began castings details to decorate the layouts because commercial castings were scarce and expensive in Canada and I could not always find the specific details that I wanted.
In time, some of the people who had become 'regulars' at the shows asked me to make some castings for them as they too had difficulty finding O scale details that they needed. Although unintended, this sideline soon began to grow toward a legitimate business enterprise and in the spring of 2001, Schomberg Scale Models was launched. We began on a small scale with a dozen or so resin and hydrocal detail parts. We listened to what people were asking for and before long, we were up to thirty items. The Riverside Market, our first building kit was added in the late summer of 2001 and the Cut Stone Lineside Shed followed later in the fall.
Today we have almost sixty different detail parts, eight building kits and over a half dozen other railway related kits- all with original pattern work. We've just started the 'Port Hope' series of structures. These are and will be based on businesses that once existed in my hometown of Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. Of special interest to me will be Doney & Giddy Men's Furnishings, an elegant shop based on one once owned by my great uncle Roy Doney and his partner, Hec Giddy.
We also have plans to expand into the G scale market as time allows. We currently have a pressed steel tractor seat and a set of link and pin coupler pockets in development for the Gn15 'critter' market (see the Gn15 site in the links page).
The photograph is one of me taken by my friend, Carl Arendt at the Mid West Narrow Gauge meet in Salem, Ohio, in April, 2002. I was caught towering over my On18 Ganaraska Cut Stone Quarry Tram layout (which was featured in the September/October, 2002 Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette).
